The African National Congress (ANC) announced that 10 of the 18 parties represented in the National Assembly have signed the Statement of Intent for a Government of National Unity (GNU).
These parties are the ANC, DA, Patriotic Alliance, IFP, GOOD, FF Plus, UDM, Rise Mzansi and Al Jama-ah. The ANC says its 10 parties won more than 70% of the vote in the 2024 elections, ensuring broad representation and a strong mandate to govern.
The statement said further organisations wishing to join GNU would be subject to Article 24 of the Statement of Intent, which provides that if a new organisation wishes to join GNU, discussions and agreements will take place between the existing organisations.
With the first phase of the GNU now complete, the ANC said discussions have begun with signatory parties on the formation of the executive, with President Cyril Ramaphosa expected to announce the appointments in the coming days.

Meanwhile, with all eyes on the promises and commitments that will emerge from the proposed Government of National Unity, Hamburg activist Chief Nico Nel expressed his own views and expectations.
“The government of national unity is just the beginning. We want to see in the next two months after the president selects his cabinet whether they are really serious about serving the country and being inclusive of all people.”
