despite their promises Electric vehicles have historically commanded higher prices than traditional gasoline and diesel cars because of their potential to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
This stark contrast in cost has long been a barrier for many potential buyers, limiting the availability of EVs to a select few.
South Africa, like many other countries, has grappled with this affordability dilemma. The initial investment in an EV is often outweighed by savings in fuel and maintenance costs in the long run.
However, these high initial costs have slowed the transition to electric mobility more than expected. Until recently, most EV models sold in South Africa fetched at least R1 million. But the situation is rapidly starting to change, despite higher import duties on EVs compared to their internal combustion engine rivals.
With this in mind, TechCentral has created a list of the five most affordable electric cars available in South Africa. They are all available for less than R1 million, challenging the notion that going green comes with an exorbitant price tag.
The Eva City Blitz is basically a modified golf cart and is currently the cheapest EV in South Africa. Check to see if other vehicles are on the list.

In 2022, BYD sold more than 900,000 electric cars, mainly in China, which caused a stir. However, the company is attracting attention globally, including in South Africa.
Its latest offering, the Atto 3, boasts an understated design, but its interior tells a different story. With unique trim inserts, bold vegan leather choices, and functional guitar strings decorating the doorbin, his Atto 3 stands out for its quirky charm.

2.GWM Ora 03
Ora, also known as Good Cat or Funky Cat in various markets, is an electric hatchback designed by former Porsche designer Emanuel Delta. Its aesthetic evokes memories of the boutique hatchbacks that abounded in South Africa a decade ago, such as the R56 Mini Cooper and Citroen DS3. Her local lineup consists of her four different models.
Ora is a notable entry into the EV market, boasting top-notch features, diverse models, and a premium feel. Despite competitive pricing compared to other EVs, they remain out of reach for many middle-class South Africans who want to adopt sustainable energy solutions.
However, this affordability barrier is not GWM's fault. The company is actively working to democratize EV ownership by offering financing options that include home installation of inverters and batteries. This is a commendable effort by his GWM to make electric vehicles more accessible to everyone.
