As Business Tech reported, South Africa is set to change its employment equity targets in 2024. New employment equity practices recently revised by the Department of Employment and Labor will replace old targets for specific demographic groups and place more emphasis on senior management.

The new goals, for which the department is seeking public comment until May 2, 2024, say it has previously focused on the demographics of Black, Colored, Indian and white workers. will be kept to a minimum.

President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Employment Equity Amendment Act into law in April 2023. This amended the Employment Equity Act of 1998, giving Labor Minister Thulas Nxesi the power to set numerical employment equity targets for each economic sector.

The department previously stated that “the implementation of affirmative action by economically disadvantaged groups in the workplace continues to lag. This law will improve employment equity among Africans, people of color, Indians, and women. “This will further encourage the implementation of affirmative action measures to redress disadvantage,” it added.

Although the above legal terminology may sound confusing, the main purpose of the proposed amendments to South Africa's Employment Equity Act is to promote equality. and ensure that all employees receive equal opportunities and are treated fairly by their employers. Let's not forget that.
