Russia says Ukrainian forces shelled a bakery in the city of Liszchansk, killing at least 28 people.
Russia says at least 28 people were killed when Ukrainian forces shelled a bakery in the city of Lishchansk in the eastern occupied region of Luhansk, and the Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergency Situations and Disaster Relief said at least one child was among the dead. It was announced that it was included.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday that “dozens of civilians” were inside the building when Ukraine attacked using the US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The Ministry of Emergencies released a video late Saturday showing first responders discovering bodies and carrying bloodied people on stretchers from the ruins of a one-story building that appeared to have been destroyed.
The building appears to have housed a restaurant called Adriatic, which local authorities say was known for serving freshly baked bread and attracting large numbers of Russians on weekends.
Foreign Ministry official Zakharova also said the Russian government expected “swift and unconditional condemnation” from international organizations.
Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident.
Nearly two years into the war, the front lines in eastern Ukraine, where Luhansk is located, have been largely static in recent months, but fighting continues to rage, with both sides launching deadly attacks throughout the winter.
Before the Moscow attack, Lishchansk had a population of about 110,000 people. After a desperate struggle in 2022, the city fell into the hands of the Russian military.
