The Democratic Alliance (DA) has renewed its call on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare an election date. The people are looking forward to the announcement of the voting date.
Prime Minister Ramaphosa is expected to make the announcement during his State of the Union address next week.
Under the constitution, elections must be held within 90 days from the end of the terms of the National Assembly and local assemblies in mid-May.
Democratic Party leader John Steenhuisen was speaking during the party's voter registration campaign in Soweto.
“We want elections as soon as possible. We cannot wait any longer to free this country from the corruption, misgovernment, weak governance, crime and criminality to which South Africans are exposed. The better. We're calling the president, please call us that day. We're ready and want to bring it to this election. We're also calling the people, the wait times and inadequate service. I think people are tired of having to deal with the provision. In places like Soweto, people are very angry at the low level of service here, the neglect they feel here, Obviously we want the opportunity to express our views at the polling station. Once the election is announced and we tell the president to give us a date, we will be ready to go tomorrow. Let’s meet.”
Mr Steenhuisen also said the DA would not object to an earlier election date if Mr Ramaphosa made such an announcement.
“No, that's not true. We say we want it, bring it to us. The sooner the better for us. We believe people are fed up…people are… They are tired of downsizing, they are tired of sitting at home without water, they are tired of seeing their children left in the unemployment line. They are tired of all this. wants an opportunity for change and I think the sooner we give that to South Africans, the better.”
This morning I had a wonderful interaction with the residents of Protea South in Soweto. With the continued growth of multiparty charters, the prospect of forming a new provincial government in Gauteng is now within reach. #RescueSA #Register and vote DA pic.twitter.com/swNOcaQfrJ
