Founded in 2006, the Newmark School of Journalism has long provided a public alternative to elite private journalism programs across the country, said Graciela Mochikowski, dean of the school. “After the pandemic, we realized that even though we were one of the lowest-cost schools in the country, there was an increased need from our students,” Mochikowski told the Observer. “We started thinking about how we could make tuition free…”
“One-time grants to schools and news organizations are an important piece of the puzzle,” Newmark told the Observer. “But if we are serious about the future of trustworthy journalism as the immune system of our democracy, then we must consider how to make our pipelines and products more resilient to changes in the economy and mood. We need to create one. Donations will help with that….”
Newmark School of Journalism has been slowly moving towards tuition-free tuition for some time. Tuition covered 20 percent of students in the class of 2023, 25 percent of the program's current classes, and 35 percent of newly enrolled classes. If the school's goal of raising $30 million over the next two years is met, this number will reach 100% by her 20th anniversary in 2026…
