Liverpool returned to their winning ways against struggling Burnley in front of a club-record and league-record crowd at Anfield to return to the top of the table.
Jurgen Klopp's side looked to fight back after last weekend's loss to Arsenal and took the lead with Diogo Jota's header from a corner kick, but Burnley keeper James Trafford was denied a goal. There wasn't.
The Clarets, who had been in the relegation zone for most of the season, equalized before half-time through Dara O'Shea's superb header, before Luis Dias restored the lead in the 52nd minute.
Burnley had several chances to equalize, but Darwin Nunez sealed the win with a header from Harvey Elliott's cross.
On a volatile afternoon, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Burnley manager Vincent Kompany were cautioned by referee Tim Robinson for protesting a decision that went against their team.
Liverpool were without first-choice keeper Alisson due to illness, but substitute Caoihin Kelleher made a fine save to deny David Datolo Fofana an equaliser, just as the score was 2-1.
Liverpool, watched by a club-record attendance of 59,896, temporarily supplanted Manchester City as top of the table after beating Everton 2-0 early in the game.
However, despite having played one game more than their nearest rivals, the Reds are two points clear, leaving Burnley in 19th place.
More to come.
