Limpopo police chief Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said the cause of the crash was still unknown and an investigation had begun.
It appears that a Renault sedan collided head-on with a police van traveling on the R101 from Mook Gophon towards Mokopane.
Hadebe said:
All five people in the Renault sedan and two people in the SAPS Toyota light delivery van (a police officer and the suspect) died at the scene.
The driver of the SAPS vehicle, a sergeant, was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.
The police officer who died in the accident was identified as Constable MM Makwela, who was attached to the Naboomspruit police force.
“The true identity is [suspect] Those who also died at the scene and the five people who died in the other vehicle will be released once their next of kin have been notified,” Hadebe said.
