Leicester's drive for the Championship title continued unabated as Jamie Vardy scored against his boyhood club Sheffield on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old veteran, whose contract expires this summer, scored his first goal and his 11th of the season against the Owls after Abdel Fattaw took advantage of a terrible defensive error to give the Reds an early lead.
This was enough for the leaders to recover after the break and secure their fifth consecutive win in all competitions, moving them up to 12 points at the top of the table despite being mired in relegation troubles on Wednesday.
Although Danny Roll's team made a comeback in the second half, they suffered their 13th loss in the away league this season and remain in 23rd place, five points behind the safe zone.
Vardy made his first league start since the 1-1 draw between the clubs at Hillsborough in November, while the return of Jannik Westergaard from injury and Steffi Mavididi to wreak havoc on the left wing meant Leicester had a chance to win the final game. It seems to be gaining momentum as it approaches the point.
They got big help from a nervous Wednesday defense within four minutes. Despite conceding four goals in each of the previous three away games, the defense was still determined to turn things around.
Goalkeeper James Beadle passed the ball to Will Vokes under intense pressure from Dennis Praet and when the Wednesday man lost control, Keenan Dewsbury-Hall pounced on it. His cross was intercepted by Vardy, leaving Fatau with a simple finish.
Things looked ominous for the Owls as Mavididi's dancing feet toyed with the defense and both Harry Winks and Wout Fayze missed golden chances to double their lead, but fans on Wednesday were ecstatic. In particular, they celebrated Marvin Johnson's meek shot, their first attempt on goal.
Leicester doubled their lead with a goal of simple beauty, as Phase's sweeping pass picked out Dewsbury-Hall, who unleashed a sumptuous cushioned volley and Vardy finished with his typical special move.
Vardy's future remains uncertain but he continues to give Leicester bosses something to think about, with this goal being his sixth in seven games. In fact, he became the club's outright top scorer this season.
Wednesday responded well, backed by the ever-motivated Barry Bannan, with Ike Ugbo nearly touching home Johnson's cross and Jaydee Gassama forcing Mads Hermansen into a sharp save.
Rolle's side finished the first half on the strength of that good result and actually progressed in the second half for 45 minutes after Dewsbury-Hall miskicked a chance and Feys deflected a cross over the bar. .
Bannan had the traveling fans cheering loudly, substitute Michael Smith failed to get a decent header on a dangerous Pol Valentin cross, and Anthony Musaba was once again crucial to Hermansen. I was forced to make a big save.
Malik Wilks and Bannan also came close as Wednesday continued to show their true spirit, but Valentin curled his volley wide from the best chance.
Leicester allowed themselves to slow down in the second half, but the win left them 14 points behind third-placed Southampton.
