Palestinian ambassador condemns international community's inaction as Gaza has become a 'lifeless and uninhabitable' area
The international community is not doing enough to stop Israel from turning Gaza into a “lifeless” and “uninhabitable” place, says Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK.
He told Yalda Hakim's The World that the rules-based international order created after World War II is being destroyed.
He said sanctions should be imposed against Israel so that it heeds other countries' warnings because “words are not enough.”
“The normalization of the mass murder of children, the normalization of the mass destruction of homes… the normalization of the complete destruction of entire communities, that will haunt us all,” Zomlot said.
“The international community only condemns and is 'concerned.' Responsible parties should act, not express sympathy.”
He accused the international community of “turning a blind eye as genocide is being committed.”
“The international order and the rules we built together after World War II are being destroyed.”
Israel strongly denies allegations of genocide and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields and attempting to commit genocide against Israel.
He also said he would do everything possible to keep civilians out of harm's way.
Asked what the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority was doing to encourage Hamas to release the hostages, Zomlot said a hostage exchange should take place.
“In the last four months alone, Israel has held 7,000 Palestinian hostages in prison without trial or prosecution, many of them children.”
