famous investor And businessman Duarte da Silva is the guest on the inaugural episode of TechCentral's TCS Legends, a new video podcast series highlighting the legendary figures who helped shape South Africa's technology industry.
Da Silva, the two-part scene-setter for the remaining limited series, knows many of the people who have built businesses in the country's technology sector since 1994, but has helped define ICT in the country. Share insights about (often colorful) characters. It transformed the sector into what it is today.
TCS Legends, powered by Mitel, has an impressive line-up of guests secured over the coming months.
But in episode 1, the first of a doubleheader with da Silva, we delve into the people, deals, and sometimes scandals that helped define the industry.
Mr. da Silva, an avid investor and director of numerous companies, is a former director of Merrill Lynch. In the 1990s, his leading analysts published reports on JSE-listed technology companies, and company CEOs reflected on his insights. I worry about what he will write about them. He also founded Macquarie First South, among other enterprising ventures, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of South African business.
A legend in his own right, Da Silva often shares funny stories beyond his TCS legends, including deals (some of which went horribly wrong) and corporate shenanigans.
Legend
On the show, he talks about many people and companies, but his primary focus is on five individuals:
- Jeremy Ord of Dimension Data (now NTT Data)
- Lou Malnitz of Persetel (currently BCX)
- Altron's Bill Venter
- Datatech's Jens Montanana
- Vodacom's Alan Nott Craig
TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod, who hosts the show, said of da Silva's interview: “If you are or have been in the South African IT industry, this is one show you don't want to miss.”
Part 2 of the interview with da Silva will be published on Monday, March 4, 2024.
