Former German World Cup winner Andreas Brehme has died at the age of 63.
The defender played 86 games for Germany and scored eight goals, including the winning goal against Argentina in the 1990 World Cup final.
He also made 301 appearances in the Bundesliga, 59 of them with Bayern Munich, where he won the title and the German Super Cup. In his four years at Inter Milan, he won the league, the UEFA Cup and the Italian Super Cup.
“FC Bayern is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Andreas Brehme. We would like to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” Bayern said in a statement.
“Andreas Brehme will forever remain in our hearts as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person. He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family. It will be. Rest in peace, Andy!”
Inter also paid tribute to the former player, saying: “He was a great player and a great Inter fan.” Goodbye, Andy. A legend forever! ”
Brehme played for and later coached FC Kaiserslautern in Germany's second division. “FCK is mourning the death of Andreas Brehme. He wore the Red Devils jersey for a total of 10 years and became German champion and cup winner with FCK.
“In 1990, he led the German national team to World Cup victory with a penalty kick and finally became a football legend. The FCK family is deeply saddened and our sympathies go out to Andy Brehme's family and friends. We honor his memory.”
Franz Beckenbauer, who coached the German national team at the 1990 World Cup, passed away at the age of 78 earlier this year.
