U.S. stocks opened Thursday higher on strong earnings results from Nvidia.
When the opening bell rang, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 232.95 points, or 0.60%, to $38,845.19. The S&P 500 Index rose 57.03 points, or 1.14%, to open at 5,038.83, and the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 323.61 points, or 2.08%, to 15,904.48.
European stocks rose on Thursday ahead of the European Central Bank's latest interest rate meeting minutes.
Britain's FTSE 100 index rose 0.3% to 7,685.53. France's CAC40 index rose 1.2% to 7,902.94. Germany's DAX rose 1.5% to 17,382.59.
The Euro Stoxx 50 rose 1.6% to 4,851.68.
In Asian stock markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 1.5% to 16,742.95. China's Shanghai Composite Stock Price Index rose 1.3% to 2,988.36.
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average rose 2.2% to close at an all-time high of 39,098.68 yen.
Oil prices stabilized on Thursday as a significant increase in US crude inventories offset the supportive effect of new attacks on shipping near Yemen.
Brent crude oil futures rose 7 cents, or 0.1%, to $83.10 a barrel at 1447 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 13 cents, or 0.2%, to $78.04 a barrel.
