With only a week left for political parties to submit their national and regional candidate lists ahead of the election, the ANC Electoral Commission has not been instructed to exclude any MPs implicated in the state capture report.
This was announced by Libkhwani Matsira, the committee secretary.
“We have not been informed of any such decision, but we will meet with officials tomorrow.” [Thursday]. They will let us know if there is a decision on that,” he said.
This comes as Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula previously said that in addressing the concerns of ANC members and the people of South Africa, the party leadership would act urgently to address unethical behavior and breaches of discipline by all party members. Despite what he said.
“We are determined to include only MPs with unimpeachable reputations on our parliamentary and local council candidate lists. If a name is not disclosed by the association, it means it is not included in our list,” Mbalula said.
At least 97 ANC members are mentioned in the State Capture Report, including National Chairman and Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, Deputy Secretary-General Nombula Mokonyane, and Sports, Arts and Culture. It also includes heavyweights such as Minister Gigi Kodwa and Deputy Defense Minister Thaban Makwetla. Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo, former Minister and current ANC Member of Parliament;
The ANC Veterans Federation has repeatedly said the party should ban those involved in the state capture report from standing as public representatives, saying it would damage the party's image.
The ANC was slow to respond to the issue, and one of its leaders, Vice President Mavuso Msimang, resigned in December, after discussions with senior officials who are said to have committed to removing the members involved. The resignation has been rescinded.
After Msimang withdrew his resignation, Mbalula issued a statement saying the party would act urgently to address unethical behavior and breaches of discipline by party members, including party leaders.
“We are determined to include only MPs with impeccable reputations on our parliamentary and local council candidate lists. This means that those allegedly involved in the Zondo commission are “Unless your name is disclosed by the organization, it means you will not be included on our list,” the statement said.
The party constitution stipulates that anyone facing criminal charges will be removed from office.
Earlier this month, ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the party had not entered into a discussion on whether those involved in the state capture report should be included in the parliamentary list.
As the March 8 deadline for political parties to submit their national and local candidate lists approaches, Matsila said the ANC is ready to submit its lists.
“We will hold an expanded National Executive Committee meeting.” [NEC] On Sunday, all countries' lists and all states' lists will be adopted. We will then be ready to register according to the deadline set by the NEC, which is March 8,” he said.
He said vetting candidates for the list is a tedious task, but the party has the capacity to do it.
“Some of what is submitted to the NEC is a matter of vetting, not details of names, but generally about how people look on the list, how many passed the vetting, etc.”
Mastira added that there was no special vetting of potential prime ministers or speakers.
“We vet candidates. If you become a Premier, you may be included on the list we are processing. So you will also be part of the vetting process. If you are going to be a speaker If so, there is a good chance that they will be selected from the same list.”
Asked if there will be any major changes regarding the list of members and if the committee encounters backlash against individuals who are not necessarily eligible to be on the list, Mr Matsira said: Once approved and accepted, you will be able to view some threads.
“It's going well so far. There's no noise around the list, it's quiet. Sometimes it's as calm as the ocean. When there's no one to complain in the media world, that's how the process is. will understand. [going] good. “
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has already declined the nomination to return to parliament, and it is rumored that Naledi Pandor has also declined. Mr Matsila could not say which of the other ANC leaders had declined the nomination.
“If you organize your list, you'll see that. For us, it doesn't matter if you're a big name or a small name. You look at it that way, but we just look at our comrades. is.”
