President Cyril Ramaphosa insists the African National Congress (ANC) is part of Amapiano's success story.
The genre has been a huge success beyond South Africa's borders, with international nods and collaborations.
In a video published on social media, the president said the ANC party had opened the door for Amapiano to other countries.
“Today, people in New York, Lagos and Nigeria are dancing to Amapiano because of the doors opened by this ANC government.”
“Young people are good at the amapiano and they are trying to teach me to dance on the amapiano,” Ramaphosa was quoted as saying.
The video caused anger among netizens, with people calling Cyril a liar.
Some of the reactions are:
“Lie: 68%. Unemployment rate: 32%,” @bruce_neptune replied.
“The 29th seems so far away now 🙄🚮🥱,” @zuma_sbu said.
“When Amapiano artists were having trouble getting visas for bookings from abroad, the entire government was silent!!! In fact, they had no interest in Amapiano or art or entertainment in general. There is no. They only care about sports,” commented @darion4k.
“The only president who can lie with a straight face,” @andile_sfis wrote.
“The way they disrespect artists, he has no right to say that… Among the haters on Twitter, they are left to fend for themselves during the coronavirus pandemic and have to survive on 350 scholarships. It's become a joke. Music is what it is because of artists and social media…sit down Mr. President,” commented @misst_prmanager.
