Since 1994, few countries in transition have been as successful in seizing control of their finances as South Africa.
Just over two decades later, the country's credibility and democratic project are in tatters as it finds itself on a political and financial cliff edge.
Business confidence and investment have evaporated along with a clean and responsible government, resulting in South Africa being downgraded to junk status, dashing the country's growth potential and driving it into a debt trap.
How did we get into this mess and can we recover from the brink?
Financial Mail's award-winning economics editor Claire Biseker unpacks the crisis in this accessible and easy-to-read guide to what makes our economy tick.
