A proposed bill in California “aims to eliminate daylight saving time and permanently move California to standard time,” a San Diego news station reported.
In November 2018, California voters passed Proposition 7. This would allow state legislatures to change daylight saving time either to keep it year-round or to eliminate it completely. However, if California opts for year-round daylight saving time, the measure would also require approval from the U.S. Congress. So far, nothing has materialized.
“I'm really, really passionate about this bill,” said state Rep. Tori Ta, adding that it's finally time to listen to the will of the voters. He drafted a new law to abolish twice-yearly time changes. But his bill would change the Golden State to standard time year-round, a measure that would not require federal action.Oregon and Washington states are also considering similar moves. [though Oregon’s bill appears stalled]. “If my bill passes, it won't require parliamentary approval,” Ta told CBS 8. “So it’s a win-win for everyone…”
Ta said his bill has support from the California Medical Association and sleep experts who say standard time is better in sync with our natural clocks. “Then why not cooperate with science?” added Mr. Tian. “That's what I believe.” One thing most people seem to agree on is that it's time to stop changing the clocks. Studies have shown that changing clocks can lead to higher rates of accidents and increased health risks.
“While this new bill continues to make its way through Sacramento, daylight savings time is still in effect here in California,” the article notes, “starting at 2 a.m. Sunday, when we move our clocks forward one hour.”
