South African Brad Binder took an impressive second place at the season-opening Qatar Moto GP on Sunday.
Starting from fourth on the grid, Binder got off to a strong start and quickly moved up to second place, before being overtaken by Jorge Martin.
However, Binder quickly regained second place from the Spaniard and remained there for the remainder of the race.
Defending champion Francesco Bagnaia, on the other hand, had a mostly comfortable run, leading the race from start to finish and taking the win.
Binder appeared to be catching up to Bagnaia in the closing stages of the race, but overtaking was not a realistic possibility.
Binder also finished second in the sprint and said he was “very happy.”
“I knew it would be difficult to go all the way. I tried to get very close to 'Pekko' (Bagnaia), but he did an unbelievable job. He didn't make a single mistake.”
The Moto GP calendar moves to Portugal on March 24th.
