The SD Biosensor World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2024 kicked off in Gangneung, South Korea on Monday, March 11th, with four sessions taking place.
21 teams will compete for medals and world titles. They are divided into his three round robin groups of seven people each.
Group A
The teams in the group are Estonia, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Slovakia and Turkije.
Title defender Latvia played two matches on the first day. They lost the first match against Slovakia 1-9, but won against Poland 10-1 in the second match.
“It's perfect to win and qualify for the tournament,” Slovakia's Monika Kunkerova said after the win against Latvia. We didn't think that we would be playing against the world champions. These thoughts should be left in the locker room. Every match is unique, whether it's against a world champion or a team participating in the championship for the first time. ”
Her teammate Radoslav Duris added: “There was a perfect atmosphere on the ice. Every stone was good from our side. That was the important point.”
Estonia also played two matches on Monday. They defeated Turkiye 9-3 in their first match. This was Turkiye's only match of the day. Estonia earned their second win of the day against Norway in the afternoon, 8-7.
Earlier, Norway had won 11-7 against Poland.
After her first win, Estonia's Katrin Riedebach said: It's always good to win, but the next game is waiting. One step at a time! ”
Slovakia maintained their good form from the morning against Scotland in the afternoon. Kunkerova and Duris won 11-3 in seven ends.
Group B
Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United States make up this group. This will be Slovenia's first appearance on World Curling Ice in this event.
Four games were played in this group on the first day.
Canada, last year's bronze medalist, had two match days. They lost their first match against Switzerland, 3-6, but won their first game against Slovenia, 9-1 in six ends.
Switzerland's Pierre-Alain Tercier said this after the afternoon's win against Canada. After winning the first match, the stress went away. ”
Regarding the key to victory, he added: “It was about concentration, good draw weight, and fun!” Having fun from the beginning was most important. It's our first World Championship so it's a great start. ”
After the second game of the day, Canada's Dennis Thiessen said, “We were a little disappointed this morning, but we got back on track in the afternoon.'' We said if we came here just for one day today, we would be happy. So we accomplished what we said we would do. ”
In the morning, last year's silver medalists, the United States, faced Finland and won 9-2.
In the fourth match of this group, Italy faced England in the afternoon and won 12-3.
Group C
The group consists of China, Denmark, Spain, Hungary, Japan, South Korea and Sweden. This is the first time that a Spanish team will participate in the wheelchair mixed doubles world championship.
Six games were played in this group on Monday.
China played the opening two games. First, they won 9-7 at the last stone against Hungary. They then played against Japan and won again, 11-4. For Japan, it only lasted half a day and a half, as they had earlier defeated Spain 7-4.
Host country South Korea also played two games. First they played Denmark and won 10-7, then they played Hungary and won again 12-3.
Denmark faced Sweden in the evening and had a second chance to get their first win. The match went into overtime, with Sweden handing the victory to Denmark as time ran out.
Opening ceremony
After the first session, the official opening ceremony was held at Gangneung Curling Center. Local Organizing Committee Chairman Kim Sung-il, World Curling Vice-Chairman Hugh Millikin, Local Organizing Committee Chairman Kyung Sung-yoon, title sponsor SD Biosensor Vice-President Lee Hyo-keun and others gave greetings and announced the competition. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Cho Yang Hyo, a member of the Korean wheelchair curling team that won a Paralympic silver medal in Vancouver, Canada in 2010.
