In Indonesia, Kashmir, Pakistan, and Turkey, Muslims gather inside mosques to pray. They gathered outside Times Square in New York. In the Gaza Strip.

In Rafah, south of Gaza, Palestinians buy food for a pre-dawn meal. This year's Ramadan comes as the Middle East continues to rage due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with many people in the enclave suffering from hunger. Even where food is available, there is little other than canned food, and the prices are high.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and begins with the sight of a crescent moon.
Fasting began on Monday for many of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, following an announcement by authorities in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest site.
Muslim community may start Ramadan on another day as multiple Islamic authorities around the world declared whether a crescent moon was sighted or whether different methods were used to determine the beginning of the month.
