After both players made par on the first hole, they returned to the tee on the par-4 18th, and Garcia grabbed a water hazard on his second shot. Burmester improved with two strokes, and Garcia holed a bogey putt to put pressure on Burmester to save par.
But there was no sweat as Burmester's three-foot par stood in the way and gave the 34-year-old, who has four career DP World Tour wins, his first LIV title.
Garcia held the lead at the end of the first round and held a two-shot advantage at the end of the second round, but fell short again in the playoff. The 2017 Masters champion lost to Tarah Gooch in a playoff at LIV Golf Singapore last year and to Chile's Joaquín Niemann in the 2024 season opener at Mayakoba.
Garcia made a dramatic 40-foot birdie putt on the 17th green to improve his lead to 12 under, while Burmester followed with his only bogey of the day on the 18th, finishing with a 4-under 68 and a total of 11-under 205. Ta. 1 week.
But when Garcia reached the green in two, he needed two more putts to add to his regulation victory. His first shot fell wide, his par attempt went through the cup, and he settled for a playoff with a final round 70.
Matthew Wolfe (69th place Sunday) finished in third place at 10 under, two strokes back. Mark Leishman (69) (Australia), Jon Rahm (69) (Spain) and Tyrrell Hatton (71) (Great Britain) tied for 4th place with 8 under par.
