Prime Minister David Cameron's words were released ahead of a face-to-face meeting with US House of Commons Speaker Mike Johnson this week. Johnson's House of Commons Republicans are deeply divided over military aid to Ukraine and have yet to pass the $60 billion aid package approved by the Senate nearly two months ago. Mr Johnson himself faces a vote to remove him.
Last week, Cameron urged European foreign ministers to “make a call” to Johnson to “pass a follow-up” after a two-day NATO foreign ministers meeting.
“Congress listens to others and America's capabilities,” he said. “The thing that has the most potential to change the narrative about Ukraine is [would be the] $60 billion flows from the US to Ukraine. ”
Cameron, a former prime minister, last visited Washington, D.C., in December, where he similarly urged Congress to pass a package to help Ukraine. In February, the Foreign Secretary wrote an op-ed for The Hill urging Western countries “not to show the weakness they showed against Hitler in the 1930s.”
But not everyone welcomed his intervention. Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, an ally of former President Donald Trump and a fierce opponent of Johnson, said Cameron “needs to worry about his country. I said, “He can kiss my ass.''
