The Fermi Paradox is the contradiction between the high probability that advanced civilizations exist and the complete lack of evidence that they actually exist. Many solutions have been proposed as to why the discrepancy exists. One of his ideas is the “Great Filter.” The Great Filter is a hypothetical event or situation that prevents and even ends intelligent life from interplanetary and interstellar expansion.
[H]What about the rapid development of AI?
A new paper in Acta Astronautica explores the idea that artificial intelligence has become artificial superintelligence (ASI), and that ASI is the Great Filter. The title of the paper is “Is artificial intelligence the great filter that makes highly technological civilizations rare in the universe?”
“Upon reaching technological singularity, ASI systems will rapidly outpace biological intelligence, outpace traditional surveillance mechanisms, and evolve at a pace that is unlikely to align with biological interests or ethics.” ”, the paper explains. The authors say their project “highlights the critical need to quickly establish a regulatory framework for his AI development on Earth and the development of multiplanetary societies, mitigating such existential threats.” ”
“The survival of intelligent, conscious life in the universe depends on the timely and effective implementation of such international regulatory measures and effective enforcement.
