Utica, NY — Team Canada won the IIHF Women's World Championship with a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory over Team USA on Sunday night.
Daniel Serdachny scored the winning goal on the power play less than six minutes into the first overtime in a high-scoring, back-and-forth game against their cross-border rivals. Sunday night's gold medal match was the second-largest in Women's World Championship history and the best since 2015, when the United States won 7-5.

Marie-Philippe Poulain scored twice after giving just two assists in six games. Erin Ambrose, Julia Gosling and Emily Clarke were also Canadians to score. Anne-Renee Debian made 19 saves on 24 shots in the win.
Last year, Team USA defeated Canada in the gold medal match on Canadian soil in Brampton, Ontario. The Canadians didn't need extra motivation heading into the gold medal match, but they certainly didn't forget what happened last year.
“Of course I remember,” Desbiens said Saturday night. “This year we want the story to be different.”
American forward Hilary Knight, who won the silver medal, won the Women's World Championship with 14 medals (10 gold, 4 silver), ahead of Hockey Hall of Fame forward Haley Wickenheiser (13). He became the athlete with the most medals in history.
