Green Point Park's new dome is not only a space that celebrates history, it's also writing its name into the history books.
Greenpoint, South Africa (April 16, 2024) — One of Cape Town's most loved parks (Green Point Park) has many people busy working to create a new educational space.
Part of the City of Cape Town's Experiential Education Garden (EEG), the dome classroom being built on the edge of the park is a clear highlight for knowledge seekers. Especially those who appreciate respecting tradition.
First opened in late 2020, the classroom was inspired by the dwellings of the Khoi people and was an exciting addition to the famous park. While the classrooms are set up to focus on educational programs and exhibits around the Coy River, the educational gardens encourage city-savvy people and tourists of all ages to connect with and become aware of the environment. helps emphasize.
It has been a long development, but a major milestone was recently reached when a curved, shaped glass dome weighing 155kg was finally installed atop the dome. This is thanks to the vision of architect Derek Cock and engineer David Marks, who helped bring that vision to life.
The dome, a first for South Africa, is said to be the first mass timber dome built on local land. According to Councilor Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and Mayco's Member of Spatial Planning and Environment, this is the world's first and first-ever three-dimensional mass timber dome.
“Mass timber is the newest and most environmentally friendly carbon-conscious building system in the world today, and this is one of the catalysts for the acceleration of this construction in South Africa,” added Councilor Andrews.
So when the dome at Green Point Park is finally completed and dusted off, it will not only be a place that honors history, it will be a place that made history.
