A Free State traffic police officer has been sentenced to five years in prison on two counts of corruption.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zweli Mokhobeleri said Tsiya Desmond Pulu, 43, was sentenced at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
“On August 29, 2017, a female complainant reported that Puru had demanded R500 in compensation to avoid arrest for a traffic offence.
“Investigations revealed that the defendant had also demanded R1,500 from another victim,” Mohobeleri said.
The court also declared Mr Pull unfit to possess a firearm.
Mr Mokhobeleri added that the Hawks' regional chief, Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, welcomed the verdict and praised those involved in the investigation.
“More importantly, we thank those who exposed the corrupt practices of police officers,” Bocaba said.
