Jonty Rhodes was more than just a cricketer, he was a pioneer and icon of the game.
Rhodes was a solid batsman who averaged in the mid-30s in both Test and ODI cricket, making as many as 245 appearances in the latter format, and was also noted for his incredible running between the wicks.
But what really set him apart was his otherworldly fielding. His agility, anticipation and acrobatic catches redefined what was possible on the cricket field. His iconic run-out off Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 1999 World Cup is a highlight in itself and a moment that will forever be etched in cricket history.
Rose's impact went beyond statistics. He was an inspiration to a generation of young fielders in South Africa and around the world, and his dedication to fitness and fielding training became a blueprint for aspiring athletes.
This passion is also reflected in his life after cricket, with Rhodes taking on various coaching roles and bringing unique training drills to the fore, particularly in the Indian Premier League.
His focus on defense revolutionized training methods, emphasizing athleticism and anticipation as much as catching technique.
Rose is an effective ambassador for the sport, particularly in India, where his passion for the sport and the country's culture resonates with fans.
Jonty Rhodes was a unique sportsman
Rose ultimately retired after the 2003 World Cup, but he did so with a legacy that transcended national borders, as world-class fielding's influence suddenly became a high-value commodity.
After retiring from cricket, Mr. Rose was employed by Standard Bank as an account officer and worked in the bank's cricket sponsorship role.
But he has since moved on to various coaching roles, taking him to South Africa, India, Kenya and even Sweden from time to time.
Before the start of the 2023 IPL season, Jonty has been appointed as the fielding coach of Lucknow Super Giants, a role he will continue to take up in the ongoing 2024 tournament as well.
India is his second home
Rose returns to South Africa regularly, but interestingly, he and his family settled in the picturesque seaside Indian state of Goa a few months ago.
“The whole family has made Goa their home and we have moved to a smaller house,” he commented in a recent interview. “Goa has treated us too well. This is my home and I want to contribute wherever I am. Goa has given us so much that this time We would also like to give back.”
Rose is an active user of social media such as Instagram and X, highlighting her incredibly active lifestyle, various brand partnerships, and passion for bikes and surfing.
He also continues to participate in various cricket support and coaching clinics, continuing to give back to the game of cricket that is so close to his heart.
