Police previously said the Florida man was considered a “conspiracy theorist of some kind.”
A man who attempted to self-immolate outside a New York courtroom where former President Donald Trump was being tried has died after sustaining serious injuries, police said.
On Saturday, the New York City Police Department announced that a man identified as Max Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, was pronounced dead at a local hospital where he was taken for treatment after Friday's incident.
Police said the man, who was born in 1987, did not appear to be targeting President Trump or anyone involved in the trial.
The incident occurred on Friday, the fourth day of President Trump's trial on criminal charges of falsifying business records, and Azzarello threw a pamphlet in the air and then used an alcohol-based cleaning product on his body. I poured water on it and set it on fire.
Police previously said he was considered to be “some sort of conspiracy theorist”.
Trump, the first former US president to face criminal charges, is on trial for allegedly paying hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
A number of police officers were at the scene on Friday as part of wider security measures to ensure the safety of the trial.
Journalists from around the world also waited outside the courtroom, and some were broadcast live when Azzarello self-immolated.
Police said the man did not pass through the checkpoint to enter the park across from the courthouse and had recently traveled from Florida to New York.
In response to the incident, authorities said they were reviewing security protocols and considering blocking access to the park where Azzarello self-immolated. The side streets where President Trump enters and exits the building are cordoned off.
