We're not trying to pull any punches when we say April might be the most puppetry month of all.
This may be seen as a controversial proposal by some eccentric people. After all, National Doll Day is his March 21st, a fitting day for the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere.
But at least around Los Angeles, we're seeing plenty of brave dolls for April, from the free Bob Baker Day dolls that just frolicked around at Los Angeles State Historic Park on April 21st to the dolls at the Skirball Cultural Center. That's going to happen. A lively doll festival will be held on the last Sunday of April 2024.
It's April 28th, and advance tickets to the sunny Skirball Ebresion are already sold out, but walk-up tickets may be available on the day of the party.
And it's a party. Puppetry (featuring the Bob Baker Marionettes, as well as Blackstreet USA Theater and the Zupeteers) will headline the five-hour schedule, as will a wide variety of quirky and fun performers.
Listen to the upbeat music of Top Shelf Brass Band or learn about the “art of puppetry” at Rogue Artist Ensemble's Shadow Lab.
The Los Angeles Puppetry Guild will also be in attendance. In fact, every month is Doll Month at the Guild, with various types of gatherings and events scheduled throughout the calendar.
The theme for 2024 is “The World of Dreams,” a lovely concept that fits perfectly with the Maurice Sendak exhibition that just opened at the Cultural Center.
