The African National Congress (ANC) is determined to gain further support in the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led Western Cape province in the upcoming general election. The party's national chairman, Gwede Mantashe, campaigned at the DA's stronghold in Mossel Bay, in the Garden Route region.
Although Mossel Bay is a popular holiday town, housing shortages, unemployment and poverty remain prevalent in the town of Kwanongkaba.

Tandiswa Shoto, a resident, explains: “Here in Kwanongkaba, we are not working as young people. We have a house with a view of the mountains and they are selling the house there and renting the house there. So we have no house. We were born here in Mosselbai. We registered for housing, but we can't get housing. So (some of us) got housing, but not all of us. was.”
Another resident, Ntombekaya Mbando, said Mantashe had promised to build a house and solve the electricity problem.
“He promised to fix our house and electricity because we were staying in Nyoka Nyoka. He said he would build us a house. He promised to provide us with a house and fix the electricity.”
The ANC national chairman said discussions on the reinstatement of PetroSA were high on the agenda of the stakeholder meeting.
“I was in a meeting with the stakeholders. That was the main discussion. We have to bring Petrosa back, so we gave them a program to bring Petrosa back. This is an asset. It's a classic example of deprivation. It's collapsed and we don't have any drilling equipment. At least we have a partner to work with.”
Mr Mantashe is scheduled to visit the Methodist Church in Thembalethu, George on Sunday.
