National Police Commissioner Fanny Masemola announced on Tuesday that police had launched an investigation into the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party for allegedly forging signatures submitted to the South African Electoral Commission (IEC).
The signatures were meant to secure a place on the ballot paper for future state and national government elections.
Former MK party official Lennox Nsondo reported the incident to Western Cape police last week.
Nsondo said in a statement that after the IEC rejected the MK party's initial registration application, it appointed a team of about 20 people in February to allegedly assist in mass forgery of signatures.
“An investigation is underway at Cape Town Central Police Station. [the inquiry] It's in the early stages.
“We are still confirming whether there really was an incident. If there is an incident, we will transfer it to the National Police Agency.” [National Prosecuting Authority] We want a decision,” said Masemola, speaking to reporters in Durban’s Inanda area.
More to come.
