Impeached public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is seeking a 15-month prison sentence for his successor for contempt of court because Kholeka Gkaleka won't pay him R10 million in alimony. She claims it's because she didn't provide “adequate” records of the watchdog's decisions.
In a supplementary affidavit and amended notice of motion filed in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday, Mr Mkhwebane said Mr Gakaleka had been found “guilty of contempt” and had been sentenced to “15 months' imprisonment or a court hearing. He asked for an order that he be sentenced to a similarly light sentence. A decision may be made after hearing the mitigating circumstances. ”
In an apparent reference to former President Jacob Zuma's 15-month prison sentence after he was found guilty of contempt of the Constitutional Court for failing to comply with orders to appear at the State Capture Inquiry, Mr Mkhwebane said: Ta. This problem is as bad as the Zuma scandal, if not much worse. ”
