Wine Dining | Farm to Table: A Legacy of Winshaw Vineyards' Storied Past
Author: Darlene Fourie
Lieutenant McGuinness had fought in the Anglo-Boer War and had bought mules for Queen Victoria's army. The lieutenant didn't know much about mules, so he offered Winshaw the job of supervising the 4,500 mules on the Larrinaga, which was sailing from New Orleans to Cape Town. Given our man's affinity for travel, he accepted. The Ralinaga finally arrived in Cape Town in January 1900 with Dr. William Charles Winshaw at the turn of the century. Through a serendipitous series of events, Dr. Winshaw married Ada Day, a British nurse, and began making wine on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. He founded the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery. This wine manufacturing company was created to help grape growers in beer-rich countries reduce the cost of growing grapes by producing and selling wine, and later became Distell, one of the largest producers of alcohol and spirits. Became a manufacturing and sales company. Africa, the crown jewel of South African wine and a company recently acquired by Heineken (beer won out). I would love to tell you all the intricacies of that story, but unfortunately this is not a history lesson, but rather what Charles' two great-grandsons, Pierre and his JP Winshaw, did on the Klein Wellmode farm. This is an interesting report on what is going on.

It's hard to adequately convey just how pleasantly surprising The First Omen, the recently released prequel to the 1970s Antichrist classic The Omen was. A few months ago, the truly abhorrent The Exorcist Believer proved once again that legacy horror sequels are almost always a terrible idea, with very rare exceptions like Annabelle and Ouija Other than that, not much has been said about the horror prequel. (Frankly, most of the prequels are good too).
