African National Congress (ANC) Vice President Paul Mashatile has called on church leaders to commit to being part of the solution to the many problems facing the country and its people.
He was speaking at a national day of prayer for the ANC by interfaith leaders and faith-based organizations in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
Leaders of various faiths attended the service, including Christians, Muslims, Rastafari, and traditional healers.
Church leaders prayed for the ANC's six priorities to be achieved. These include jobs, an inclusive economy, better lives for all and defending democracy.
The leaders of the ANC, formed in the church in 1912, were encouraged to never forget God.
The ANC deputy commander called on religious leaders to help build a society that cares for young people and the most vulnerable.
He said President Cyril Ramaphosa, like a Biblical character, would instruct South Africans to cross into the Promised Land where ANC rule would continue for another five years.
With less than 10 days left until the decisive election, the ANC's president and some officials are planning to travel to Gauteng to step up campaign efforts. Gauteng is expected to be a highly contested province with more than 50 political parties competing for seats in the provincial parliament.
