The prominent former African National Congress (ANC) councilor and musician, who recently joined the MK party, believes his party has the ability to unseat the ruling party in next week's general election.
Disco legend Eric Nqobani, popularly known as Papa Penny, resigned as an ANC MP and Greater Giyani City Councilor last week.
Nqobani tendered his resignation as ANC public affairs councillor and branch chief on 14 May.
A video of him taking part in an MK rally last weekend is going viral on social media. He says that despite being a leader in the ANC for more than a decade, his contributions were never recognized.
“When I was still in the ANC, for 40 years, they never understood the importance of penny-penny and prevented me from working for the community and everything I was doing for the community. The roads you saw when you came, they didn't have any money at that time until President Zuma came and gave the Limpopo community. They dismantled the Limpopo establishment. President Zuma came and gave us a way. That's why I think I can join this party,” Nqobani says.
ANC spokesman in the province, Norman Mashabane, Peter Ngobeni, said he was not concerned that Papa Penny had left the party because he had profited more than he had contributed to it.
“Mr Nqobani left the ANC with colorful shoes, a sharp nose, an obnoxious hairstyle and spitting songs, which are not appealing at all to this generation. When it comes to the quality of membership. , the ANC hasn't lost anything. But in terms of quantity, we have lost one member,” says Ngobeni.
