African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has ruled out the possibility of his party's leaders or members of its national executive committee resigning if the party's approval rating falls below 50% in next week's general election. .
He was speaking to the media on the party's preparations for the Siyankoba rally at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Several opinion polls predict that the ANC could lose power for the first time since 1994.
Mr Mbalula said he would review the election results after voting.
“We are not stepping down because it didn't work. We are actually staying on and submitting a report and reflecting on where it went wrong, why the campaign didn't work. We have a process. The evaluation is done by the ANC members and they come to a conclusion at each meeting. The conclusion that it didn't work and we won't be re-elected is based on empirical evidence. So we are not elected to step down after the election. We come together and reflect. And that reflection is based on how we have done.”
