Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader Peter Groenewald announced that his party had endorsed IFP leader Berenkosi Hlabisa as chair of the multiparty constitution.
FFPlus is part of a multi-party agreement, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), IFP, Action South Africa and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), which aims to reduce the African National Congress's vote share to below 51% in next week's elections.
Gronewald confirmed the DA had accepted that party leader John Steenhausen would not serve as constitutional chair.
Groenewald said: “If you look at the members of the multiparty charter at the moment, I still stand by my position of choosing Hlabisa. As for John Steenhuisen, as you said, I said I would not nominate him for president because the DA would be the majority party in that coalition government, and the DA accepted that. John Steenhuisen has accepted that he will not be president and has said he wants to be the leader of government affairs in parliament.”
Meanwhile, Groenewald says the party wants to increase its number of seats in the Limpopo provincial legislature.
The party currently holds just one seat in the state assembly.
Gronewald told SABC News that FFPlus was not only focusing on Gauteng but also rural areas across the country.
“So Gauteng is important. Rural areas are very important. Look at the North West, the Free State but also other provinces that we support such as Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Limpopo will be a surprise in this election. We think we can get up to three seats in the provincial parliament,” Gronewald says.
