Three children were killed and 10 people injured in a tragic collision involving two cash-in-transit vehicles, a minibus and a sedan in Meyerton, Gauteng on Tuesday.
Among the injured were three employees of security company SBV Services (SBV) and the driver of the sedan.
Details about the condition of the occupants of the second cash transport truck remain unclear.
ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Hussteen said when emergency crews arrived at the scene on Pianef Boulevard at around 4pm there were multiple victims with injuries ranging from serious to minor.
“Two of the seriously injured were taken to hospital by medical helicopter for further treatment. ER24 and various medical services at the scene treated the victims before transporting them to various hospitals,” she said.
Midvaal Fire Chief Hannes Stein confirmed the deaths.News24 reported that three children died at the scene.
“Some of the victims have been taken to hospital by helicopter. Police are investigating,” he said.
SBV CEO Mark Barrett confirmed in a statement that one of its vehicles had been involved in the accident and said it was “deeply saddened.”
“People in the SBV vehicle, including three SBV employees, were also injured.”
Barrett offered condolences to the families of those who died and thanked medical workers.
“We hope that those injured recover as quickly as possible. SBV's risk team followed standard procedures as required by law when a car accident occurs. We cannot provide any further information until the investigation provides more clarity.”
“SBV Services is a responsible corporate citizen and will take all appropriate steps to cooperate with authorities in their investigation of this incident.”
Part of Pierneef Boulevard was temporarily closed to traffic in the afternoon.
The accident came just hours after a minibus taxi collided with a truck in Limpopo province at about 5.30am, killing 13 people, 11 of whom were believed to be teachers on their way to school.
Both drivers and the taxi passengers, nine women and two men, were killed.
Limpopo provincial road and community safety spokesperson Florence Radzilani Vongani Chauke said the accident was caused by “reckless driving” by the truck driver, who was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road.
He added that all of them had died, and that police officials were waiting for an official tally to confirm that 13 people had died.
