The IEC has said it will order a recount of votes in certain areas if there is evidence that this is necessary.
IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepiya told media at the ROC that the committee would address any concerns raised by contestants through the appeals process, which has been extended until 6pm tonight.
A number of political parties are in dissent, including the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Rise Mzansi, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and the African Congress for Transformation (ACT).
Such extensions are permitted under the Electoral Act upon application for leniency in respect of objections filed after the stipulated deadline. In this case, contestants had until 9pm on Friday to lodge their complaint.
IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepiya said the committee's approach was not overly technical.
“The Commission's stance in this process is not to prioritize form over substance. We are not going to get bogged down in technicalities. We will consider the issues raised and will do so with a view to ensuring the integrity of these elections. If the Commission finds anything significant through the results process, it will order appropriate remedies, which in some cases may include a specific recount.”
