The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says 100% of the national election results have been collected and announced, but 579 challenges have been filed.
The appeal was filed before the results were finalized. Political parties had until 6 pm to file their appeals.
IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepiya was addressing reporters at the National Results Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, on Saturday evening.
Moepya said the 579 objections may go up a bit as there may be other objections that need to be addressed.
He said six general themes were raised in the objections filed.
“In some cases, the results had not yet been processed when the objection was submitted. Second, there are third-party complaints where a particular person told me they voted for me or my party, but the results cannot be verified at that polling station. Third, there are cases where you have a voter alleging under oath that their vote was not reflected in a particular polling station and they are in fact providing the commission with a basis to evaluate that complaint. Fourth, you have people questioning the allocation of seats and asking what things are taken into consideration when allocating seats. Fifth, you have people raising issues related to the conduct of these elections. And the final theme is people raising issues affecting the conduct or training of electoral officials,” Moepiya says.
There were 10 window edits that were approved, and this is an opportunity to match the captured results with the slips. And they have been processed. I believe the committee needs to review them and go through that process.
“Opening the edit window will reverse or advance the results on the leaderboard. So opening the edit window when it's at 100% will have the effect of reversing the finality of the results. Secondly, there are 24 cases where the commission has ordered a recount. In all these cases, we are in touch with the Chief Election Commissioner and his staff as well as the political parties involved in the recount. The commission is committed to acting without fear or prejudice in carrying out this process,” Moepya explained.
The IEC is expected to announce the results of the election on Sunday.
