The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng says it believes it could have done better in the province if voter turnout had not fallen so sharply.
He won 100% of the votes in the state, with the DA coming in second with 27% of the vote.
This follows the African National Congress (ANC) on 35% and was a significant drop from the 2019 provincial elections.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) came in third with 13% of the vote, followed by the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) in fourth place with 10% support.
DA Gauteng chairperson Fred Nel expressed satisfaction with the election results.
“The DA in Gauteng is pleased with the election results and our performance in the election. Naturally, every party would like to win more votes, but given the fact that voter turnout fell by over 13%, the fact that the DA was able to retain the votes it won in 2019 shows that the party is solid and very credible. Our increased share of the national vote is also a positive sign for parties in the province. The DA in Gauteng therefore welcomes the new political set-up and believes it has established a solid foundation for future growth.”
The IEC declared the seventh general election to be free and fair. The ANC won just over 40% of the vote nationwide, the DA about 22%, MK 14.59% and the EFF 9.5%. https://t.co/vzuhhAJ9PW

Meanwhile, ActionSA in Gauteng says it has to scrap its plans after failing to meet expectations in the provincial vote.
The party came in fifth in the state with 4% of the vote.
ActionSA's Gauteng premier candidate, Funzi Ngobeni, said he was disappointed with the election results.
“As ActionSA in the province, we had hoped to perform better in the province than this election, we had hoped to at least maintain the votes we gained in the 2021 local elections, especially in the capital region. But since that did not happen, we have to revisit our plans, look at where we went wrong and introspect with the party structure and leadership,” Ngobeni said.
