016FMis a new drama series set in the Vaal region of Gauteng, starring the late Mpho Sebene and renowned actress Ntati Mosheshe.
The story is about two DJs with opposing personalities who work towards their goal of saving the radio station, but encounter difficulties such as ousting a dangerous underworld organization that has infiltrated the station.
The new TV show will premiere on June 26, 2024, with new episodes airing every Wednesday on Showmax.
Before his death, Mpho spoke about how he strived to deliver a great performance on the show.
“The Var region has a big pop culture movement that is heavily influenced by Italian high fashion. As DJ Whisky is also Italian, I immersed myself in understanding this movement to get a better understanding of who he is. That's why I needed to spend time interacting with local people, especially those who started the Ama Italiana and Izikotane culture.”
“I also looked at a lot of videos and skits online, purposefully looking for skits made by people in the Vaal going about their daily lives.”
“I also keep in touch with my friends in Sebokeng and Sharpeville. [which form part of the six townships in the Vaal] And that helped flesh out this character.”
“This research has given me a deep appreciation and respect for the area – it has so much history and has so much to offer. I feel like shows like 016FM show the great potential of the people of the Vaal.”
