Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Velenkosini Hlabisa said his party was committed to forming a government of national unity at the national level alongside the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Hlabisa made the announcement in Durban on Wednesday afternoon.
In last month's general election, the MK party won a majority in KwaZulu-Natal with 45.35% of the vote.
The IFP lagged behind with 18.07%, followed by the ANC with 16.99%.
Hlabisa said the party had yet to decide who it would work with in KwaZulu-Natal.
“At the national level, the IFP has decided to become part of the GNU. At the provincial level, we are meeting with the ANC, DA and NFP to work towards forming a government in KwaZulu-Natal, where we know Friday is the deadline but this work remains ongoing.”
Meanwhile, Hlabisa said discussions with the KwaZulu-Natal MP party were continuing despite the MK party failing to fulfil a previously scheduled meeting.
“MK leadership did not honour the pre-arranged meeting. Our delegation was waiting for some time but the meeting was cancelled as they did not arrive. The MK party has made a fresh attempt today to contact the IFP.”
