The Council of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) has expressed concern that its members are being excluded from negotiations between the political parties ahead of the formation of the African National Congress' (ANC) proposed Government of National Unity (GNU).
Contralesa chairman Lamech Mokoena says no political party has approached them for input, and he warns that if traditional leaders are not included in negotiations they will not be able to take part in the 2026 local government elections.
“Contralesa has looked at the results of past elections and is also aware that across all political formations there was no clear winner. Contralesa is also aware that there are discussions to form a government. However, Contralesa is concerned that whatever outcome emerges from these discussions, the views of traditional leaders will not be taken into account. We are concerned that traditional leaders have not even been consulted,” he said.
He added, “It would be a big mistake if this discussion ends without listening to traditional leaders. By the way, I would like to advise these parties not to forget that the 2026 elections are just around the corner.”
The National Assembly's first meeting is due to be held on Friday and will elect a president and speaker.
