The African National Congress (ANC) has announced at least two women as candidates for prime minister, following interviews conducted by the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC).
In Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba will replace two-term premier Stan Mathabatha.
McQueen Letsoha-Masae is set to replace Mxolisi Dukwana as Premier of the Free State.
The other three provinces where the ANC has won a majority of votes to govern alone are the Eastern Cape, where Oscar Mabuyane remains premier, North West, where the party's deputy chairperson Lazarus Mokgosi is the new premier, and Mpumalanga, where the party's provincial chairperson Mandla Ndlovu is running.
Gauteng will retain Panyaza Lesufi as premier, while Dr Zamani Sole will remain as Northern Cape premier.
The ANC says it believes this leadership team can address the challenges facing the provinces.
Both the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are out of their reach as the Democratic Alliance won with Alan Winde becoming Premier and the MK party won over 45% of the vote in the province, meaning the KwaZulu-Natal Premier candidate has yet to be decided.
