The Free State's new premier, MacQueen Letsoha-Matae, who also serves as treasurer-general of the African National Congress Women's League, says she is committed to making the province a beacon of hope. Letsoha-Matae will be the province's fifth woman to hold the position since democracy began.
The seventh government is in good spirits, with Letsoha Matae saying that rooting out corruption will be a top priority under his leadership, and that he will put in place mechanisms to protect the state treasury.
“The issue of corruption is a priority. It has been the enemy of progress in the Free State province. We are here to serve the people,” Masae said.
Zanele Shifuba was re-elected Speaker of Parliament.
Ms Julia Maboya was elected and sworn in as Deputy Speaker.
The opposition parties also voiced their opinions.
“We congratulate the new prime minister but all we need is to see change in all of this,” said EFF chair Mapule Liphoko.
“We are looking forward to seeing how they operate and do their job. That's all we can say for now,” said Sandile Mabiza of the MK party.
Outgoing Prime Minister Mxolisi Dukwana wished his successor the best of luck.
“She has proven herself to be excellent at her job. Now it's important to jump into action. In this movement, we are all on a mission to work for the people. I trust her.”
