Mpho Shaba has revealed he is still paying singer Zahara's hospital bills which amount to more than R800,000, despite being given the cold shoulder by her family.
Zahara, whose real name was Bulelwa Mtukukana, died on December 11 after spending about three weeks in a private hospital in Johannesburg.
The musician was buried in his native Eastern Cape on December 23rd.
According to the Sunday World newspaper, Mpho said his family had not been involved in preparing his fiancée's funeral and that he did not know where she was buried.
I was not involved in the funeral arrangements at all. [They did] “No one consulted me about anything. I and my family were completely ignored. Our opinions were not given any weight. In fact, we were not allowed to have an opinion,” he said.
“The funeral I attended was a public ceremony at the ICC. I never went to the cemetery. To this day I don't know where she is buried because things were so bad.”
“Her family created the crisis. They lied. Her sisters lied too. … They said I was busy claiming Bulelwa's property but I don't know why. I have three properties but I don't know why I thought that when Bulelwa's house was on the verge of being auctioned again. And I am the one who said, 'Let's get out of this situation',” he said.
Shaba said he was paying Zahara's hospital bills after her family refused to pay despite the abuse.
“I am still paying her hospital bills. Her hospital bills total about R820 000. Luckily the medical grant covered R712 000. I have to pay the rest. No one in the family can pay because obviously they are only thinking about themselves and what they can get out of all this,” he said.
