The making of “Queen Modjaji”
Queen ModjajiGersh Kgamedi, Creative Producer at Citizen The series carefully balances historical accuracy with creative storytelling.
“In African culture, showing breasts wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
But within the confines of television, and in the modern era, how we represent black bodies, and black women's bodies in particular, is incredibly important.
So when we were designing the costumes and thinking about the overall look of the show, we had to take into consideration representation and respect for black bodies.”
Kgamedi said he hoped the show would help people learn about and understand the legendary Queen Modjadji.
“Our main aim is to entertain but most importantly to educate people on the legend of Queen Modjadji. She is one of South Africa's most important leaders.”
“Not many people talk about it, and when they do, they do so out of context, without understanding the history of Queen Modjadji and her impact on the shaping of South Africa.”
