President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to announce his cabinet on Sunday, so as the country waits to see who will be the seventh government, we take a look at the salaries of his ministers.
According to the constitution, an independent body should make recommendations regarding the salaries, allowances and benefits of the president, vice president, cabinet and their vice presidents.
The president approved a 2.5% across-the-board salary increase in recent weeks, based on recommendations from an independent commission on public office holders' remuneration.
For the 2024/2025 financial year, the deputy president's pay package will be just under R3.165 million per year, up from about R3.08 million, while the president receives just over R4 million per year.
Ministers' remuneration is about R2.69 million per year, compared with R2.62 million in the previous financial year.
Their councillors will earn just over R2.215 million per year, up from just over R2.16 million in the previous financial year.
MPs' salaries are not far behind, with the highest-ranking MP's salary rising from just under R3.1 million to nearly R3.2 million a year, while the lowest-ranking MP's salary will rise from R1.243 million to nearly R1.275 million.
The Independent Commission on Public Service Remuneration said in its report that it took a range of factors into account in recommending the 2.5% increase.
Dawee Root, chief economist at the Efficient Group, says South African ministerial salaries are in line with other countries around the world.
But those countries have fewer ministers than ours, he says.
