Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has denied allegations that the African National Congress (ANC) had taken the decision at provincial level to protect the ethnic Afrikaner town of Orania.
Speaking on the sidelines after his inaugural speech in parliament, Sole said that in its negotiations with various political parties, Freedom Front Plus comes armed with two concept documents.
One focuses on the establishment or formation of a state government, while the other document describes Orania’s current status and future development.
These are just discussion documents, not decisions, he says.
“Some of the things they propose in the first provincial government Freedom Front Plus constitutional document are quite modest and reasonable and I'm sure we are going to get it done. One of them is that the only member of the provincial government will be the chair of the portfolio committee on CoGHSTA. But the second document raises a number of issues and we have taken that document to the national negotiating team. There are preliminary responses in that document and we have shared that with Freedom Front Plus. We have not taken a decision to protect Orania in the Northern Cape.”
The ANC, which failed to secure a majority in May's elections, won votes from the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and FF Plus, which helped Saul secure a second term as prime minister.
